Thanks to theweaselking.livejournal.com via Damerell for pointing out what I missed.
The J J Abrams "I don't know how distances work" was a lot BETTER than in StarTrek, but it still made a lot of problems that bugged me but I hadn't articulated until I saw someone else explain them.
Seriously, how do you have a map to a person. How do you NEED a map? Why isn't it "abandoned monastery on north continent of $planet_name"? Does that map cover a tenth of the galaxy that no-one knows what it looks like? It doesn't work like that BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE STARS ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE GALAXY SO EVERYONE KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE ALL THE TIME THAT'S HOW STARS WORK.

Date: 2016-01-06 06:02 pm (UTC)Although I have a nagging feeling that despite their awesome characters, Finn and Rey were still short-changed in some way by the film even though I can't put my finger on exactly how. (That nagging feeling usually means a lack of agency in an otherwise prominent character, but I'm not sure that's the case here.)
