I'm being fogged at work. M asked "Having a bad day?" No, it started wonderfully, and then I slept well, with regular water breaks, but then I was late for work and slightly tired...

ie. Last night I went to the carlton for Pippa's bdaythingy. It was great to see Pippa and Edith and Susan and people again. They are very lovely and very cuddly. I'd forgotten how hug-starved I was :) I'm glad Pip managed a good day without being very ill, she deserves it. And was nice to chat to her; normally we talk almost entirely by email or in CTS meetings :)

I was moderately drunk (I remember 4 pints, there may have been another... :)) I was noticeably slurring and wobbly, and chose to walk back, ringing a friend en route, rather than cycle on the road. However, I think I managed to converse coherently and -- with effort -- audably. I think I was about optimal for talking to people; uninhibited enough to join conversations and speak forthrightly unpromptedly and uninhibitedly, but not drunk enough to monopolise or spacing out. Right?

Clare and people are organising a cambridge con in 2007. Go!

M and people were going to oxonmoot. I think I'm right not to try to go two in one year :)

I walked most of the way back with M and people, and caught up with them a bit, and heard more legends about people before my time. At one point we stopped to chew gum, I mean, argue about whether if you jumped in a falling lift you'd hit your head on the ceiling. Eventually we found a convincing rationale (it's like freefall, right? so yes) though this in no way affected our intial certainty that this wouldn't prevent you fatally concatinaring your femurs into your vital internal organs.

I'm very confused. You do not mean my M when you say M. So who do you mean? I suppose if you wanted to say who you ment you'd have just written their name, but I can't think of an M, or at least, I can think of so many M's it becomes meaningless...

Yours densely

Sally

I was about to ask the same question as every time I see just 'M' I think it's your M :)

I apologise for monopolising one twenty sixth of the alphabet. It's very mean of me.

:) That's all right. I've got 1/26 of it myself, as I tend to use the letter "j" in place of my own name a lot of the time :)

Really it's more like 1/52, as I think of you as "j" but not "J".

I sign off emails as --J. But fair point. :)

I would have thought 'J' -- though come to think of it, I have seen 'j' more, or at least, more than most people who sign 'j/J' would do.

Of ocurse, it's not helped by my also signing 'J' :)

Oh, it's all Matthew's fault.

I would say "But we're hardly likely to intersect any of your relatives so it's ok" except at least two people in this thread know your cousin :)

Indeed, and I could have written "My Dad calls [livejournal.com profile] mhk M sometimes".

I didn't know you knew her M...

I don't. I might have vaguely seen him in a pub a couple of times or something, but I've the association "single letter M" and "Sally's other half" rather than to M himself, iyswim.

Ah, fair enough.

In addition, is the M mentioned at the beginning of the post the same M mentioned at the end of the post?

I think it's probably [livejournal.com profile] angelofthenorth, but it would be kinda cool if it were someone else, any suggestions for comedy Ms?

It even works in two ways: codename M and using the title 'Ms'... :)

Eek! No, I think Angel is still on a placement atm...

Eh, was just a guess based on the frequency of mentions of people in your LJ. (Can you tell I'm bored? ;))

ROFL. OK, that's logical. Is 'frequency' an impression or a script? :)

Impression, I'm not that bored ;)

LOL. It's always intriguing to learn what impression you do give. But as it happens I don't think Angel intersects *that* much with the Carlton crowd.

I lose track of who's who in the Carlton crowd; livejournal names blur into each other and userpics get confused easily.

Yeah. I know most people by now, but still don't know some and get some muddled up. And I'm never sure which people I know know each other how; I often have to stop and calculate to know if I should introduce two people, or stop intruding on two old friends :)

Sorry. I try to avoid using full names on LJ because some people don't like eveyr move they make to be public, though come to think of it there's no particular reason not to here.

I invariably use 'M' to mean 'Matthew' as opposed to other names. First M is Matthew known as MHF. Second M is Matt R., and Duncan and Graham, who I sort of consider an honorary Matthew :)
