Feminism means:
"Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes." (The dictionary definiton.)
People who think women are still mostly opressed, who most people think are loonies.

"It means the first. feminist, on the other hand, is usually the second."
"You can't spell oppressed! And there are ways in which women are still oppressed. And indeed men are also constrained by gender stereotypes. Woman's hour this morning was talking about the patriachy being a cause of men's shorter life expectancy"

I need to rephrase the second, perhaps.

Loonies are just loonies, but quite a few otherwise-sensible people come out with things like "I don't consider myself a feminist|like feminism because <loonies>". There's several mistakes that I suppose might lead to this: for instance listening to the loud to the exclusion of the sensible; attempting to shift blame for own opinions onto loonies; misanalysis of society.

Yes, exactly. Though according to some people, the shift has occured to the point where loonies officially do characterise feminism.

Right, those are the otherwise-sensible people. Err, at least the otherwise sensible ones are the otherwise-sensible people, IYSWIM.

I think so. [livejournal.com profile] gerald_duck and I had an afternoon's argument about whether the meaning had shifted, and left it differing, so I'm trying not to assume it either way when arguing related things at the moment :(
