My body is working great at getting me up at nine when I go to bed at three. Why can't it do that when I go to bed at twelve?

because when you go to bed at twelve it thinks "yay! finally! he's stopped running around like a clockwork madman and relaxed. *now* maybe I can catch up on all that sleep" ...
