Some people are coming round this evening, and I'm giving serious consideration for not apologising for the mess. I never need to because they're friends, and it's still disorganised enough I should, but it's been better than normal all month, so I might go ahead and not! :)

LOL. Not quite. Most people I know have houses that are nearly like that a lot of the time, but get cleared up in the common areas. But we still go through the ritual of expecting to offer somewhere nice rather than simply accepting the mess ;)

Would you believe I was actually part way through cleaning it up there?

Actually, yes, because:

(a) That way you're less embarrassed to take photos and put them on the web
(b) Houses naturally achieve local minima (eg. shoving stuff into corners) so to progress to global minima (ie. tidy) they have to get over an intermediate hump (laying everything out all over the floor and bed so you can see where to put it) :)

Indeed!

It was pretty bad before that though. Luckily things have never been even remotely as bad as that for many years (I was very depressed at the time).

Two of my friends came over the next day and cleaned my flat all day!
