Recommendation: Jogging

Jogging was very nice; this was the third time, but I felt able to breathe, and like I actually got a workout, I was definitely tired by the end of it. However, my leg[1] was aching a bit all day.

[1] My cycle prop leg, inconveniently.

Recommendation: Pooh Soc

Poohsoc, as always, was very funny. And the elections were all conducted with aplomb, successfully finishing the entire thing in two hours, which is very good going for any AGM.

I failed to acquire foreign secretary, so am actually temporarily off the committee, although it is good to have James on the committee. I'm trying to remember if I've ever been successful in any election for any society: almost all are not serious, but I can't remember if in all I've either been clearly the only candidate, or clearly not.

Recommendation: Rice Boat

The Rice Boat is an Indian restaurant by the Granta, Sala Thong and Mill Pond, but (apparently) actual food cooked Indian fashion as opposed to amorphous (if nice) curries. And many things are vegetarian, the starters are especially interesting.

I was about to say it was expensive, but it wasn't, it was just nice enough that we had three courses plus wine.

Recommendation: University Centre Bar

We went on after poohsoc, and the very nice man let us have hot water and then milk, gratis, for the making of tea. We bought some coffee and beer, but I mention here as this behaviour should be encouraged.

Sometimes we've been to the Rice Boat after a Wednesday seminar, and experiences have been a bit mixed. I've usually enjoyed my food, but others with me haven't sometimes. And it's maybe 5GBP pc more than the Sala Thong, which has vastly superior food, would be. Also sometimes you can be waiting well over half an hour before any of your food makes a show. So the linguists complain about it a lot, but I'd say my personal experience has been that the food can be good[1] and it's a pretty nice place. Plus, sometimes they give you pot pourri[2] to eat when you've finished your meal.

[1] The pancake type things are delicious.
[2] Did you get that? We all decided it was pot pourri anyway - some flaky looking stuff served in a big jar.

*cuddle* I've never actually *been* to the Sala Thong, I know I must.

I probably need some time to make an objective decision on it. It was certainly nice. But food like that always feels like it's cheap (not as in bad, just literally cheap to you), even when it isn't, as you feel it must have been in India. So it may or may not be really worth it, but it is a nice place. (Then again, one medium-sized person could probably eat one dosa all night, for 5GBP.)

[1] Dhosa? Several people highly recommended. I think we loved the Vada starters the most. And the desert wine :)

[2] Oh yes. We argued about what it was, but were provisionally in favour.

I don't think it's fair to say Sala Thong has vastly superior food. Sala Thong is a Thai restaurant, the Rice boat is a Kerala restaurant and as such they are completely different. Which is better depends on your personal taste and your mood on the evening.

I have found the service at the Rice Boat to be quite slow when I've been there, but whenever I have, I've not be in a hurry (certainly not a place to go if you are) so it's not been a problem. Both trips I've made there took around 3 hours, but in the form that you sudden notice with shock that you've been in the restaurant for 3 hours when you leave rather than 3 hours which drag along. However, the food there always seems very freshly prepared and I'm not sure how this compares with other Kerala restaurants as I haven't been to any (although apparently their are several near Euston which I may attempt to visit at some point).
