I've recently been experimenting with different configurations of the beard ("not shaving"). After all, I was wrong in thinking this beard wouldn't be good, I thought I might as well experiment further for my own satisfaction. Today I couldn't take it much more and decided it wasn't any good and shaved all the rest off.

My idea that having at least some parts shaved make everything look neater and more deliberate is reinforced. I think sideburns, despite the retro-ness don't suit me whatsoever. But I feel a lot better about experimenting now, even if I look stupid for a while in the middle. After all, what does it matter?

You could trim down to the moustache-and-goatee thing that people cultivate in order to look edgy and radical: it reminds me of the upholstery brush on the hoover and I find this amusing.

Er, what sort of socially unacceptable did you have in mind? (You possibly don't want to answer that.)

still haven't seen the beard ):

even if I look stupid for a while in the middle. After all, what does it matter?

I concluded that I don't mind looking stupid among friends, and I don't mind looking stupid among people who don't know me at all (supermarket shopping or whatever), but I mind among people I don't know very well who (I think) I fear might get the "wrong" impression of me or something.

Occasionally I am doing something in town where I expect not to meet anyone I know, and run into someone in that class of people, and I have strong urges to say "I know I look stupid!" and giggle.

This is probably not relevant to your beard issues...
