I've recently been experimenting with different configurations of the beard ("not shaving"). After all, I was wrong in thinking this beard wouldn't be good, I thought I might as well experiment further for my own satisfaction. Today I couldn't take it much more and decided it wasn't any good and shaved all the rest off.
My idea that having at least some parts shaved make everything look neater and more deliberate is reinforced. I think sideburns, despite the retro-ness don't suit me whatsoever. But I feel a lot better about experimenting now, even if I look stupid for a while in the middle. After all, what does it matter?

Date: 2008-04-04 10:25 am (UTC)I should try trimming it down to a goatee-like thing at some point and see, but I think the current beard is right for me, I was mainly considering extra beard :)

I concluded that I don't mind looking stupid among friends, and I don't mind looking stupid among people who don't know me at all (supermarket shopping or whatever), but I mind among people I don't know very well who (I think) I fear might get the "wrong" impression of me or something.
Occasionally I am doing something in town where I expect not to meet anyone I know, and run into someone in that class of people, and I have strong urges to say "I know I look stupid!" and giggle.
This is probably not relevant to your beard issues...

Wonderfully phrased, yes, exactly. (Dad used to tell a story of a man who had an old coat he really liked and his wife didn't, and she's say "you can't wear that" and he'd say "it's ok, everyone knows me round here"; and then one day he was going up to london wearing it, and she said, "you can't wear it there", and he said "it's ok, no-one knows me in london!" And only years later was I able to articulate why he could have been consistent after all :))
