I recently brought my household bin in from the garden (don't ask, not the big "black bin", the human sized one), and left it by the front door, as it was a bit muddy. Then I got a flyer. Hey, those jokes about two in trays really have a point, don't they? Win.

Rcv1 recently lent me "Three seasons of angel videos, with a video player". (I decided I wanted to see Angel enough, but probably not to see it again, hence borrowing.) Video cassettes are really cumbersome, but they look lovely lined up on the shelf, and now I have a video plugged into a cable receiver plugged into a DVD player plugged into a TV. I'm sure that's not quite right, but win.

The bike fairy (university cycles) collected my bike and fixed it. Thank you. Win.

Other recent little victories include:

* Shower curtain rail. It fell down ages ago, I taped it together, and never got round to fixing it properly. However, it's quite clever inside: one rod fits inside the other, and the end of the inner is an off-centre rotating wood bit, so you simply extend them fully and twist, locking them in place.
* Mud guard. I can't remember what I fixed about it, but it must have been satisfying :)
* I made a firefox quick search to turn "lj username" into a full URL. It's amazing how often saving that little bit of typing helps your mood.
* Tesco started selling a marvellous innovation! A pesto jar wider than a spoon! :)

I have been incorrectly using these black bins for some time. Which species are they for?

Hmm.. why do you ever want to do that? I just use robhu.lj.com/friends and atreic.lj.com/friends...

Dustbin lorries.

I have a few filters I read up to date by default, but If I remember a recent post by someone I want to go back to, or want to find an old post by someone, or remember someone I meant to friend, I often want to go straight to their journal. (The other shortcut is to open my user info and click on their name there, but if I know it, I want to type username.livejournal.com direct, and this shortens that.)

Oh cool, I'm glad it makes so much sense! I worried it was just me that ever had it as a problem :)

Nuh-uh, quick searches like that are vital. I have about twenty set up in various places, and half of them are used enough that you can tear them from my cold, dead hands. I think g (google), w (wikipedia) and i (IMDB) are the ones that get the most use, but there's various internal stuff and Perl/PHP docs that get a lot of use at work.

Although "fb" for facebook at work has been getting far more use than it should lately...

Yep, I have the same top three :) It somehow felt different to use it for an URL I actually know, rather than one involving a query string I might legitimately forget.

There's lots of the internal ones I can easily remember, but it's far easier to just type "fi foo" than "http://server.chu.cam.ac.uk/stuff/stuff/find.php?IP=foo"

It seems much of computer tweaking is just finding ways to avoid more typing than strictly necessary :)

i think my top three are google, wikipedia, google maps (m).

when i'm tired i tend to type m by default for some reason and find myself trying to look things up in google maps.

i recently added a 'stalk' one for wp:contributions ...

Alternatively you could use a narrower spoon?

I did used to use a narrower spoon. But it spooned less pesto :)

not the big "black bin", the human sized one

*blinks* You have bins bigger than a human? *blinks*

Well, the black bin is equivalent to a dustbin, it probably is bigger than a human: about five feet tall and just wide enough for a bin bag of stuff. But by human sized I meant "sized to be convenient for use by a human in day to day use", where something two-three foot high and a foot wide is more convenient to have inside your house.

In my mind, something 'larger than human sized' is extraordinarily large - a human-sized house is a normal thing, whereas a 'bigger than human sized' house has (for example) 14ft high doorways and tabletops you need to jump to reach.

Your way makes more sense, but it less fun.

LOL. Well, yeah, that is about what I meant, except that instead of _extraordinarily_ large, just a little bit over-scale. The dustbin black bin probably is up to twice the side of a kitchen bin , which is what I was going for.

Mud guard: Now I remember. The spoke holding it came away, and I clipped it back, but only later had time to fiddle with the little screw and finally fix it properly.
