Deporting Becky
Oct. 25th, 2005 12:58 pmOn friday Becky was off to Peru to live her Mendoza fantasies and several of us met to hug her off. First, Corpse Bride. I was going to arrive 15 min early, etc, etc, but had work, and got there 5 min before to find puzzled texts from sonic. Maybe people should text someone in a round robin way when going so if I'm first I don't have to wonder if anyone else is coming.
I can't think of anything especial to say about Corpse Bride, but it was very good. The right smattering of puns, the right slightly creepy but cute feel, lovely characters expressed well by their models. In fact, it's an aspect of something I often enjoy (cf. subtitles), doing something out of the mold just because it's right: there were a few songs, not enough to make it a musical, but just right where they were, which felt entirely natural somehow. And you really shouldn't be able to get away with such funny shaped characters, but it really informed their, well, characters.
Of course, the metaphysics was a bit dodgy, but it always is :) I felt like saying to people who nitpick firefly or Neal Stephenson: "What's wrong? You wouldn't dream of saying 'but corpse bride didn't make sense'" :)
Then we went to the Carlton for dinner, and then back to becky's to watch pack, wash up, and have Pirates of the Carribean in the background. It's silly, but it is a really good film. Despite what everyone says, I in fact like their metaphysics too :) And captain jack squee! And he is camp, so yah boo to you, who called me homophobic :)
Then gerald_duck drove us all to the bus station and we loaded becky up with 3T of supplies and she picked up the coach and staggered off to heathrow.
