Glasses

I've been wearing my new glasses, the nicer ones. They're not perfect, but I definitely look better than in the old ones, both in terms of perceiving better and appearing better, which was the aim of the exercise. At some point, I'll shop around more for some perfect glasses (I think I'll stick with rimless after-all, but maybe look for wide arms), but I feel bespecticaled to the necessary extent for the moment. I think I see well.

I have the cheap pair of glasses, but with the recent prescription. Now I just have to worry if the weirdness is from having new glasses, or if they are quite right. (Can anyone suggest anything to reassure me?)

The promotional giveaway with them was a strange round gummy sweet (embedded in a plastic square), with the design of an eye? Who thought of that? It's fairly obvious, but it was rather squick biting into it! On the other hand, I'm advertising them.

I felt a little tired today; almost exactly as I did a week ago, just before I got ill, in fact. I just hope that's down to being busy, rather than coming down with something. (I'm fairly sure, in fact.) I didn't feel like drinking, well, not more than a glass of mead, though I had to remind myself that if it feels a bit much, don't sip it quickly to get it out of the way, sip it slowly so it has time to settle :)

However, I finally, finally, got some new glasses. A nicer pair, and a cheaper pair for spare. Though of course, considering the amount of time glasses spend on my face, I can easily justify getting *another* pair if I want it, and mixing and matching. I'm slightly worried by getting them without trying them on in a shop, but I think looking online is very nearly as good, especially when you consider that if you try them on, you can't see what you look like. However, browsing many does give me a feel for what I like and what I don't, whereas previously I just stuck with what I had because they seemed fine and I couldn't be bothered to experiment.

I don't know how they'll turn out -- though I'm excited to try -- but now I feel good as I'm finally, finally ahead of where I was at the end of last year! :) And having got something I meant to do for ages out of the way, I can relax a little for a bit. (Except for getting things done at work.)

Opticians

I got into town this morning for an eye test and I have a new prescription. As I was coming out I was hungry and I got some food from boots for breakfast, and was all set to sit on a bench in the rain reading and eating before going, when I met Jacob and sat talking matho with him, eating, in the rain instead.

(I'm stubborn, ok? I should probably break the habit, but it's only raining a little, so I'm going to do what I want and damn the weather :))

Amongst other things, he asked if I knew if there was a Millets shop, and I said I was fairly sure they had been the second-least unhelpful shop last year when I'd hunted for a camping stool. Over *there* if I remember correctly.

Wandering around seems like the wrong game, had he tried google. Was it in the Grafton Centre? He didn't think so -- he'd seen it about and he rarely went out there.

I tried google on my phone, and it found millets in cherry hinton, and in ely, but not the one in town. (The interface is a little limiting.)

At this point, a nagging feeling came to the fore, and I pointed back, and asked "Can you read what it says on that green sign?"

He groaned in success. I said, "I *said* I needed new glasses."

I read the paper at the weekend. A few things jumped out.

1. http://observer.guardian.co.uk/magazine/story/0,11913,1525134,00.html

Highscope was an experiment supposedly establishing that if you give small kids lots of help and support they're more likely to grow up... ok. Sure start is a new governemt program doing stuff for kids. Well, it's a good approach.

It's funny how a few naked people are weird, but *lots* of naked people are art. Woo exhibitionism! :)

3. http://glassesdirect.co.uk

Some entrepreneur with bad eyesight noticed that (1) the price of glasses was inflated way over what they cost to make and (2) you can go to opticians #1, get an eeye test, take the prescription, and buy glasses from optician #2. So he cut out the middle men, and is selling online from £15+ for complete glasses.

I haven't looked for testimonials yet, but I was going to investigate for my next pair.

Of course, I don't know how much *eye tests* cost. If they're subsidised by glasses sales this company isn't going to be stable, but it might be good for now.
